WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – A sprawling 18-acre wooded property just 15 minutes from Ann Arbor hosts a beautifully designed custom home inspired by the style of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The custom home at 3900 N. Dixboro Road in Superior Township was designed in 1992 by architect Carl D. Gilmore, who began his career under Alden B. Dow, himself a former apprentice of Wright. Taking inspiration from the Prairie School where Wright began his career, the home blends the natural beauty of the property with extensive custom woodwork and masonry.

Six hundred tons of Oklahoma “Pencil Rock” form the structure and interior and exterior walls of the home. Rather than being mined or quarried, the stone is taken from the ground at surface level and undergoes as little cutting as possible to preserve the natural edges and texture visible.

Custom cherry wood casements, furnishings and decorative joists with integrated lighting fixtures complement the stone walls inside the home.

The architect’s references to Wright even extend to the cast brass hardware used for the latches on the home’s windows. The architect sought out and used the same molds Wright used for similar hardware in his homes.

The four-bedroom, 4.5 bath home is built into a natural hillside, with a sunroom, deck and a pair of entryway landings each offering a unique view over the wooded acres.

A wide stairwell leads to a balcony over the open-plan living area which connects to the upstairs master suite. Two main-floor bedrooms are connected by separate halls containing a shared office space and a bathroom with his-and-hers sinks.

As in many of Wright’s designs, there are sitting areas with built-in lounge benches and cabinetry scattered throughout the home.

The kitchen features commercial appliances including a six-burner range with a gas griddle. Extensive custom furniture and light fixtures match the home’s design and are included in the sale.

The 5,100-square-foot home is listed at $3,67 million by realtor Keith Brandt.
