Are you dreading the spring and summer ahead in the garden? Perhaps you have areas that are tricky to keep under control, inherited a particularly high maintenance plot, or just don’t have the time and energy for it any more. The term “low maintenance” conjures up images of mass evergreens and dull supermarket car park planting, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

I often get asked how to reduce the workload in the garden by those who, for whatever reason — health, kids, work — don’t have time for it, and if you’re making a garden from scratch there are simple things to consider.

In some cases, there may be an initial input of work, cash or both.
