Cool lamps are one of 2023’s biggest decor trends

In this four-part series, we’re bringing you the hot interior design trends you’ll be seeing everywhere in 2023. Week four: statement lamps.

It’s time for lamps to have their moment in the limelight. “Lighting in general is becoming more prominent in people’s decor, and I’m like, ‘Hallelujah!’ because it’s so, so important,” says interior designer Joanne Dolan. “Getting layers of light into a room will make it enjoyable throughout the day and various seasons.” Think a chandelier for when you want to fill a room with light, paired with table lamps dotted around a space when you want a cosier feel.

In particular, the “statement lamp” will be big in 2023. According to Dolan, this ties into another trend: The growing popularity of vintage and antique pieces, particularly ones with a 1960s or art deco feel. “In those design eras, you had a lot of ornamentation and beautiful shapes in things like lamps,” she says. (Dolan loves going treasure hunting at Toronto spots like Eclectisaurus, The Door Store and Vintage & Antiques on Kingston Road.)

There’s also a trend for “interesting” stone — travertine, marble with bold veining — that’s reflected in the sculptural lamp bases you’re seeing on every cool interiors Instagram account.

“Lamps are a great way to get a few trends into the mix,” says Dolan, likening them to adding trendier accessories to an outfit made of classic staples. “They’re a way you can add in more interesting and current materials and textures to a room.”
